The Syrian state television has reported that the country’s army has 'cleaned' Midan area of the capital Damascus of armed terrorist groups.

The report said early on Friday that the army regained control of the restive Midan neighborhood. "Army forces have completely cleaned the area of Midan in Damascus of the remaining mercenary terrorists and have reestablished security,” the state television said.

On Thursday, Russia and China blocked a UN Security Council resolution aimed at imposing sanctions against Syria. Washington and its allies have condemned the veto.

Chinese newspaper People's Daily said on Friday the West is seeking a green light for military intervention in Syria. "Frankly speaking, Western countries attempted to push the United Nations to vote for the sanction resolution in order to get the green light for their military intervention,” the paper said.

Syria has been the scene of violence by armed groups since March 2011. The violence has claimed the lives of hundreds of people, including many security forces.

Damascus blames "outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
