Chairman of International affairs of the Union of Islamic World Students, Mr. Iman Adeli, had an exclusive interview with Rohama.Org about Shaikh Rashid al-Ghannushi, the Islamist leader of Tunisia.
Q: Would you explain the personality of Shaikh Rashid al-Ghannushi in brief terms?

A: Shaikh Rashid al-Ghannushi was born in 1941 outside of al-Hama, in the Qabis province of southern Tunisia. He received his certificate of attainment degree, equivalent to the Baccalaureate, in 1962 from the University of Zaytuna.

He entered the school of agriculture at Cairo University in 1964, but following the expulsion of Tunisians from Egypt due to the dispute between Gamal Abdel Nasser and Habib Bourguiba, he left for Syria.

He studied philosophy at the University of Damascus, graduating in 1968. He spent a year in France at the Sorbonne before returning to Tunisia and, along with many other Tunisians, established an organization devoted to the reform of Tunisian society based on Islamic principles.
To defend his ideals and publishing the magazine of Al-Ma'refah, he was sentenced to the death but was eventually deported. He was the professor of Philosophy. "The movement of Imam Khomeini and revival of Islam's life" and "We and West" are considered from his famous works.
He was arrested in 1980 and after freedom traveled to Persian Gulf states such as Iran, Sudan and Lebanon.

Q: How much do you know about the works of Shaikh Rashid al-Ghannushi?

A: He has written many books in several fields such as social and philosophical issues, Islamic movements and Palestine.
Public freedoms in the Islamic state
We and the West (jointly)
From the experience of the Islamic Movement in Tunisia
So when Ibn Taymiyya
Rapprochement in the secular and civil society
The Islamic movement and the issue of change
The Palestinian issue crossroads between paths
Women between the Koran and the reality of Muslims
Citizenship rights in the Islamic state
The difference right and the duty to unity
Some of his books were translated into other languages including English, French, Turkish and Persian and have published in Egypt, Iran, Tunisia, Turkey, and Algeria.

Q: How did you make familiar with the leader of Tunisia's Islamists, Sheikh Rashid al-Ghannushi?

A: For the first time, I saw Sheikh Rashid, the leader of Tunisia's Islamic Movement, in Turkey. I can remember his speech in the "Youth and World Future" conference held in Istanbul.
Based on the wisdom and Brotherhood, he remarked on the Islamic movements, Islamic revolution in Iran and the role of Imam Khomeini (R.H) in the huge movement of Islamic awareness.
Q: What is the main difference between Sheikh Rashid al-Ghannushi and the other intellectual leaders of Islamic world?

A: The main difference has stemmed in the type his attitude to Islam and the West. He believes that Islam can solve all of the human being's problems. He has strongly stood against secularism and eclectic thoughts.

Always he announces Zionism as an international danger and backs Palestinian people and freedom of Palestinian lands.

He defends the Islamic revolution of Iran and the personality of Imam Khomeini (R.H.) and for that reason he has been pressured by dictators.

Generally the intellectual leaders of Islamic world can be divided into two main groups;

1. This group believes that Islamic states cannot manage their affairs without the Western powers. Islamic world cannot solve its own problems unless the United States of America and the Europe help it.

In this regard, Muslims will not achieve the aim of "But the might belongs to Allah, and his messenger and the believers".

2. Another group believes that the colonialism has never helped Islamic countries and they just attempt for exploitation of Islamic resources.

And this is the attitude of pure Islam which some of famous scholars follow it such as Sayyid Qutb, Imam Khomeini, Sheikh Mahmud Shaltut, Hasan al-Banna and so on.

I think Sheikh Rashid al-Ghannushi belongs to the second group and he can be categorized as the leaders influenced by pure Islamic movements like Islamic revolution and Palestinian Intifada.

Q: Finally is there anything else about Sheikh Rashid al-Ghannushi and the Islamic country of Tunisia?
A: Will the destiny of Tunisia be changed? Will the leader of Tunisia's Islamic movement come back in his country? Have America, France and the West designed a new plan for suppression of Islamic movement in Tunisia?

The answers of the questions depend upon the current Islamic movements appeared in Tunisia.

Steve Clemons studied Goldberg's Atlantic ailcrte thoroughly, and corrected on critical omission in Goldberg's narrative:Clemons wrote: when Jeffrey Goldberg conducted the astonishing interview he recounts in his ailcrte with UAE Ambassador Yousef Otaiba who essentially said that if Iran continued on its current course, the UAE would support a military strike against Iran. What Goldberg failed to mention is that Otaiba also strongly emphasized that the most important radicalizer in the region was the unresolved Palestine-Israel dispute and that the smart strategy to deal with the Iran challenge was to unwind the Israeli occupation. He and other senior Arab leaders have told me that in their view, this would neutralize much of Iran's growing power in the region. In one of my own interviews with a very senior UAE diplomat, I was told that the best way for the US and allies to confront Iran was to deliver on Palestine and then to work with the Saudis, UAE, and other oil-producing Arab states in making the price of oil crash to very low levels. He said that this would generate humbling conditions for Iran and knee-cap Iran's ambitions. And then he said, Iran would work with us and these games would end. Haggai Ram makes the same argument from a different direction in Iranophobia Ram says that Israel justifies its oppressive behavior toward Palestinians by casting Palestinians as well as Mizrahi Jews (Orientals) and Iranians (Orientals) in the same category of backward people spoiling the Ashkenazi dream of planting Western Europe in the Middle East akin to Ephraim Sneh's fear that Iranian influence will drive Jews, especially young American Jews, out of Israel. Israel has conflated its oppressive tactics against Palestinians with the US war on terror'(indeed, Ehud Barak labelled and wrapped the package from a TV studio in England on Sept. 12, 2001, before US had had a chance to think about what had happened) calling Palestinian resistance to occupation acts of terror, and granting itself leave to react ever more harshly to Palestinians by citing the US-Israel JOINT mission to cleanse the world of terrorism.*Israel's Arab neighbors have been insisting for some years that the solution to Iran is first to solve the Israel-Palestine conflict. Goldberg elided that part of King Abdullah's statement. It is a recognizable phenomenon: Israelis simply do not process information that runs counter to their constructed version of reality.* Herzl, on zionism's salvific mission: Prayers will be offered up for the success of our work in temples and in churches also; for it will bring relief from an old burden, which all have suffered. But we must first bring enlightenment to men's minds. The idea must make its way into the mast distant, miserable holes where our people dwell. They will awaken from gloomy brooding, for into their lives will come a new significance. Every man need think only of himself, and the movement will assume vast proportions. And what glory awaits those who fight unselfishly for the cause! Therefore I believe that a wondrous generation of Jews will spring into existence. The Maccabeans will rise again.Let me repeat once more my opening words: The Jews who wish for a State will have it. We shall live at last as free men on our own soil, and die peacefully in our own homes. The world will be freed by our liberty, enriched by our wealth, magnified by our greatness. And whatever we attempt there to accomplish for our own welfare, will react powerfully and beneficially for the good of humanity.
